Aztlán

Aztlán by Dino

All letterpressed, 6 pages, 3 illustrations, run of 30, £5+p&p

Girasol #3. Aztlán, tierra juncal – ‘the land of the reeds’ – is the mythical homeland of the Aztec people, a transnational real-imaginary space stretching across south-western USA & northern Mexico. It crosses this territorialised border/land to connect both cultures. Dino, who lived in the USA for over 40 years, reckons obliquely with both Spanish and North-American colonial legacies in this brief, lyrically tender poem. Aztlán was taken up by Chicanx culture as an emblem of the Mexica’s primordial right to the southern United States, projected into the future as a new Hispanic nation–La Republica del Norte.
