Route 57 #14
In 2018 Girasol Press published Issue 14 of Route 57, The University of Sheffield’s creative writing journal, Loco-Motion, in collaboration with the National Railway Museum, York. This anthology of creative work by Sheffield staff, students and alumni is wonderfully designed throughout by the book artist Abi Goodman and printed in collaboration with local risograph printers, La Biblioteka’s Choriso Press, Sheffield.
Loco-Motion takes the culture shock of the railways, their histories, present and future, as a jumping-off point from which to interrogate speed, transport, mobility, ecology, stasis and the politics of travel. The contributions interpret the theme broadly, veering off down the branch-lines of automotive, technological and bodily loco-motion, while stressing the ways technology alters perceptions of space and time. Abi conceived the volume as a cohesive conceptual response to the theme and to the manuscript, and her attention to detail on every page of these books plays the words’ meanings off against her visual intellect. The authors were delighted to have their words set in such a beautiful and original way.
